Mastoid

The mastoid process is a conical prominence projecting from the undersurface of the mastoid portion of the temporal bone. It is located just behind the external acoustic meatus, and lateral to the styloid process.

The mastoid part represents the entry point to perform a posterior petrosectomy as well as the extended and combined varieties.

It is separated from the suboccipital bone posteriorly through the occipitomastoid suture; superiorly from the parietal and bone and squamous part through the parietomastoid suture and supramastoid crest respectively; and anteriorly it is connected with the external auditory canal through the spine of Henle.
