Evidence suggests that epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activity promotes the transition from neural stem cell to intermediate progenitor cell by upregulating Numb and inhibiting Notch

During neural stem cell division, asymmetric segregation of the cell fate determinant, Numb, into daughter cells is thought to promote neuronal differentiation by antagonizing Notch. However, genetic deletion of Numb and its homolog, Numb-like, in double-knockout mice leads to premature neural stem cell depletion, indicating an essential role for Numb in neural stem cell and neural progenitor cell maintenance 1).
